IT consulting is really _not_ for everyone who thinks s/he can do it, and this book tells you why, by painting a realistic picture of it. It tells you about everything a person wanting to be an independent/startup IT consultant can expect. For when it was written it clearly seems ahead of its time.
Be aware that the author is based in the UK, and the tax related and some other advice given is more relevant to those in the UK. This is a minor point, however.
I did some quick calculations per the author’s recommendations:
Assumed inputs:
* Desired annual income (before overtime) = $100k
* Time spent per week on updating skills, administrative tasks and marketing = 1d + 0.5d + 0.5d = 2d
Calculated outputs:
* Time available per week (before o.t.) for actual work = 5d – 2d = 3d
* Desired rate per hour to make desired annual income (pre o.t.) = $48.08 (per CalcXML) * (5d/3d) = $80.13 = $80 after rounding
Of course in real life it’s the market that determines one’s wages.
